Doing Our Part to go Green
Did you know that many of your favorite wines may be “Green Wines”? Not green in color, but hand-crafted wines that are Earth friendly. Many winegrowers, winema kers, producers and importers have for years embraced Earth friendly wine practices, partly because “that’s the way it has always been”. In the last 35 years, many others in the wine industry have switched to Earth friendly wines, whether by necessity or for the betterment of the soil, grapes and the consumer.
Biodynamic wines are made using principles of biodynamic agriculture that has its basis in a spiritual world-view, treats farms as unified and individual organisms, emphasizing balancing the holistic development and interrelationship of the soil, plants, animals as a closed, self-nourishing system. Organic wine is made from grapes that have been grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Certified organic wines are certified by local, regional, or national government agencies. Sustainable wines are farmed with little technological involvement as possible in the growing and wine making process. Some sustainable wineries will also use solar panels to provide energy, taking them off of the electric grid and occasionally selling power back to the local utility company.
